Raphael Knox holds two citizenships — Norfolk and Florence — and answers fully to neither. He boarded the SS Pathfinder as one of its four hundred sponsor-class passengers, which on paper makes him cargo with opinions. The paper has not kept up. He also happens to be the best combat-rated shuttle pilot aboard, a fact command has had to make its peace with, generally at short notice.

The file is honest about the rest. Three stints in the ship's brig so far, none of which he disputes. A scar through one eyebrow he has never explained on the record. A single Italian word tattooed on the inside of his wrist, in his grandmother's handwriting, which he has never explained at all. He calls the chief medical officer "Doc" and every cadet "Cadet," and somehow neither ever sounds like disrespect.

Twice a week he cooks enormous pots of food in his quarters and carries them down to the crew bar, where he feeds whoever turns up. The crew can't decide what he is. The sponsor section says crew. The crew says sponsor. Both sections keep showing up to dinner.
